Malta Attractions – Where to Go in Malta
Located at the south of Sicily, Malta is a small archipelago consisting of only three inhabited islands – Malta, Gozo and Camino. In spite of its size, though, Malta has a rich history and an interesting culture. There are several amazing Malta attractions to visit, too.
Golden Bay – Located on the northwest coast of the island of Malta, Golden Bay is the second largest beach in Malta, as well as one of the most popular. Although not very suitable for swimming because of its strong currents, the bay projects a fun atmosphere for the entire family and is a great place for evening barbecues because of its spectacular sunsets.
Megalithic temples – The megalithic temples in Malta date back to as early as 5500 BC, making them the oldest stone structures in the world (even older than the Pyramids of Egypt) and the most popular Malta attractions. Even if you have no interest in archaeology, you’re sure to admire the beauty of these ancient stone temples, particularly the Ggantija complex and the Mnajdra temple.
Hal Saflieni Hypogeum – The Hypogeum is just as popular as the megalithic temples, particularly since it is the only existing prehistoric underground temple in the world. It is both a sanctuary and a burial site and has also yielded various treasures, such as statues of the Sleeping Lady, which can be viewed at the National Museum of Archaeology.
Roman Villa – Aside from the catacombs of St. Paul and St. Agatha, the Roman Villa is the most prominent reminder of the Roman occupation in Malta, which is why it is also one of the Malta attractions worth seeing. The grounds of the villa have yielded various archaeological finds, too, such as oil lamps and marble statues.
Lascaris War Rooms – These solid rock chambers were used by Allied naval and air forces during World War II, both as headquarters and as the command post for Operation Husky, the first invasion of Axis-occupied Europe. It is also one of only four World War II command centres open to the public.
Blue Grotto – So named because of its deep blue waters, the Blue Grotto is a treat for spelunkers, particularly because of its remarkable natural rock formations. Other natural attractions in Malta include the Azure Window, which is especially spectacular in winter, as well as the Calypso’s Cave, rumored to be the cave mentioned in Homer’s Odyssey.
Aside from these top Malta attractions, there are other sights worth seeing, including the Citadel in Gozo which was built by the Knights of St. John and the Church of St. Paul’s Shipwreck. Malta is well known for its medical tourism, too, so it’s possible to get excellent medical treatment or undergo cosmetic surgery while spending your holidays in Malta.
